The Sunday
Club is hosting its first Pinewood Derby. Although this might be new
to many of us, the Pinewood Derby has been around since the 1950’s!
If you 'google' pinewood derby, you will find all kinds of
information, ideas and helpful tips to make your race car the very
best. We are hoping this addition to the Sunday Club calendar will
be a huge success and will continue to grow in future years.
How
does it work?
Each
youth will be issued an official pinewood derby race kit. The kit
includes the block of wood with pre-cut axle grooves, 4 wheels and 4
metal axle tacks. You can design your race car to look as you like.
Your imagination is the limit! The block of wood at the wheels must
be stay 45mm wide to be able to fit the track lanes. Any narrower
you car will not be able to race. You can add weights to your car,
but the car cannot exceed 5 ounces (142 grams). You can shape the
block, sand it smooth, paint it and decorate it. There will also be
a ‘Car Show’ and prizes will be awarded to the best looking entries!
Race Day
Each car
will be entered into the Car Show. Once the races begin, your car
will be placed on the wood track and raced in a series of heats.
Each heat will be 3 races. The top cars will advance until the 1st,
2nd, and 3rd car emerges from the group. |
